The short definition the Japanese word 'Rinpa'

There are three major meanings to this word. The first translates as ethical student. Thus the Rinpa Kai translates to the ethical student association, and the Rinpa Foundation becomes the Ethical Student Foundation.

The second refers to a movement of artists in the late Heian, that looked back on the glories of the Tang with longing, and suffered distate and despair for the vulgarity and barbarity of their own Age. Ko'estsu is perhaps the leading figure of this group. There was a major exhibition of his work on the east coast of North America several years ago, and the website (www.aikijujutsu.com) should feature several of his paintings.

The third meaning has to do with being precious or valuable, as in metals like gold or silver.

These are the main meanings.
